Sir David Cannadine is a British historian whose work focuses on modern British history, the aristocracy, class, monarchy and the British Empire. He is Dodge Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University and served as editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography from 2014 to 2026. Cannadine is particularly associated with studies that examine how social hierarchy, ceremony and public institutions shaped British identity. His scholarship combines political, social and cultural history, often questioning conventional narratives about class conflict, imperial power and national development.

His major books include The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy, Ornamentalism: How the British Saw Their Empire, Class in Britain, The Undivided Past and Victorious Century: The United Kingdom, 1800–1906. Cannadine has also written biographies of figures including G. M. Trevelyan, Andrew Mellon, Margaret Thatcher, George V and Elizabeth II. Victorious Century, his contribution to the Penguin History of Britain, examines nineteenth-century Britain at the height of its industrial and imperial power while emphasising the profound anxieties and political tensions beneath Victorian confidence. Across his work, Cannadine is particularly interested in the ways monarchy, aristocracy, empire and social status have influenced modern Britain and its understanding of its own past.
