Jane Ridley

Jane Ridley is a British historian, biographer and author whose work concentrates on the British monarchy, political leadership and the social world of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A professor of modern history and an accomplished biographer, she has written extensively on prominent figures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, combining detailed archival research with a strong narrative approach. Ridley is particularly associated with studies of royalty and aristocratic political culture, examining not only the public careers of her subjects but also their family relationships, personalities and private lives. Her work has helped bring greater nuance to figures who have often been reduced to stereotypes in popular accounts of British history.

Ridley’s best-known books include The Young Disraeli, a study of Benjamin Disraeli’s formative years, and Bertie: A Life of Edward VII, a major biography of Queen Victoria’s eldest son and successor. In Bertie, Ridley reassessed Edward VII as more than the pleasure-loving prince of traditional caricature, tracing his difficult relationship with his parents, his long apprenticeship as Prince of Wales and his eventual importance as king. She later wrote George V: Never a Dull Moment, which examines a monarch frequently portrayed as conventional and unremarkable but who reigned through the First World War, the collapse of European monarchies, political upheaval and the transformation of the British Empire. Across her biographies, Ridley uses individual lives as a means of exploring the wider political, dynastic and social changes that reshaped modern Britain.
