Gareth Russell is a Northern Irish historian, author and broadcaster whose work concentrates on royal, social and maritime history. Educated at the University of Oxford and Queen’s University Belfast, he has also written novels and plays. His historical writing combines biographical detail with close attention to court culture, social hierarchy and the wider political forces surrounding prominent individuals.
Russell’s books include Young and Damned and Fair, a reassessment of Catherine Howard and the court of Henry VIII; The Ship of Dreams, which examines the sinking of the Titanic through the experiences of several passengers; The Palace, a history of Hampton Court; and Do Let’s Have Another Drink, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. He has also written Queen James, published in North America as The Six Loves of James I, exploring the king’s personal relationships, court and reign.
