Edwardian Society

1901–1914 CE

Edwardian society preserved many late-Victorian assumptions about class, service, marriage and public respectability. Country houses, town houses, servants, clubs and social seasons still shaped elite life, while the working and middle classes faced rising costs and political mobilisation. The period had both glitter and friction.

It matters because the social world of 1914 was not simply swept away by war; it was already under pressure. Suffrage, labour unrest, education, newspapers and consumer culture challenged inherited authority. Servants, heiresses, reformers, journalists, politicians and families all experienced a society in which inherited structures were increasingly under pressure.
