Gunpowder Plot
1605 CE
The Gunpowder Plot was uncovered in November 1605. Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, planned to destroy the king, lords and commons at the opening of Parliament. The plot grew from frustration with the continuation of anti-Catholic laws under James.
It mattered because it became one of the most enduring symbols of religious conspiracy in British memory. The failed plot intensified suspicion of Catholics and reinforced the state’s security culture. Its annual commemoration helped turn a political crisis into national ritual.
The plot is central to many Jacobean thrillers and historical mysteries, and it fits the espionage territory of Rory Clements and S. J. Parris.
