Summer 1606. England is still living with the political consequences of the Gunpowder Plot when Christian IV of Denmark visits his brother-in-law James I. James, Christian IV, Cecil, Bacon and Walter Raleigh belong to the historical Jacobean world, while the assassin and Ned’s investigation are fictional. The novel uses the atmosphere of intensified security after Gunpowder and the culture of court performance, including Macbeth at Hampton Court, to conclude the Spycatcher trilogy.
