The first Jack and Amy Cole novel uses Mary’s English captivity and the intense political anxiety surrounding her claim to Elizabeth I’s throne as its historical framework. Mary and the great political divisions are historical, while Jack, Amy and the immediate conspiracy are fictional. Veerapen treats espionage as a household and marital danger as much as a court intrigue.
