The Lacey Chronicles

The Lacey Chronicles follows members and associates of the Lacey family through three connected romances set between 1582 and 1586. William Lacey inherits the title and debts of the Earl of Dorset; his brother James seeks redemption through service and Atlantic exploration; and their illegitimate half-brother Kit attempts to build a life in the London theatre. Ellie, Jane and Mercy each confront a society in which marriage, property and family obedience sharply restrict women’s choices.

Across the sequence, private relationships intersect with Elizabeth I’s court, Walter Raleigh’s plans for Roanoke, the growth of professional theatre and the Babington Plot. The novels combine romantic plots with alchemy, merchant wealth, religious division, racial prejudice, treason and the legal vulnerability of wives and widows.
