Roanoke Colony

English expeditions backed by Walter Raleigh established settlements on Roanoke Island in 1585 and 1587. The ventures depended on maritime supply, private investment and knowledge obtained through contact with Algonquian-speaking communities along the coast of present-day North Carolina.
