The Elizabethan

The Elizabethan series tells the later Tudor story through six real people whose ambitions and relationships brought them close to Elizabeth I. Francis Drake, Robert Devereux, Walter Raleigh, Penelope Rich, Frances Walsingham and Bess Throckmorton each occupy a different part of the queen’s world: the sea, war, exploration, court favour, intelligence, marriage and the Privy Chamber. Their careers show how opportunity under Elizabeth could turn rapidly into scandal, imprisonment or treason.

Across the sequence, England’s conflict with Spain, Atlantic privateering, the Nine Years’ War in Ireland, the Essex Rebellion and the uncertain Stuart succession move from background to immediate danger. The books also follow overlapping families and friendships, so the same events are seen from sharply different positions: a favourite seeking glory, a sister caught in his fall, a wife managing confiscation and exile, or a gentlewoman punished for marrying without permission. Together they form a biographical panorama of the late Tudor court.
