Eighty Years’ War, 1568–1648

The Eighty Years’ War began as resistance to Habsburg taxation, centralisation and religious persecution in the Low Countries. Revolt, foreign intervention and civil conflict divided the region, while the northern provinces developed the institutions of the Dutch Republic.

A twelve-year truce ended in 1621 and warfare resumed against Spain. Sieges, river lines, fortified towns and competing loyalties shaped the campaigns of Maurice of Nassau and his successors until Spain recognised Dutch independence in 1648.

Historical fiction uses the war for stories of mercenaries, merchants, religious division and the unstable boundary between local politics and European conflict. The Laughing Cavalier and The First Sir Percy place the Blakeney ancestor within the Dutch Republic during the renewed war.
