The Netherlands, March 1624. Three months after the events of The Laughing Cavalier, Diogenes is now Sir Percy Blakeney and prepares to marry Gilda Beresteyn in a double wedding attended by Maurice of Nassau. The celebration is interrupted by military news from the eastern provinces, where renewed war with Spain has placed Dutch forces and communications in danger. Percy accepts a mission to carry urgent messages across the frozen Veluwe.

The journey becomes a contest of ambush, divided loyalty and concealed purpose. Willem van Oldenbarnevelt, Lord of Stoutenburg, remains an enemy after the failed plot against Maurice and exploits the instability created by the wider war. Percy’s companions and new family are drawn into the danger, turning a military courier mission into a defence of both the Dutch cause and his marriage. The novel continues the ancestral Pimpernel story in the opening phase of renewed Dutch–Spanish conflict.
