Nantes, 1789, and England, 1793. Pierre Adet, a peasant humiliated by the aristocratic de Kernogan family, remakes himself as Martin-Roget and pursues a long revenge against Yvonne de Kernogan. His scheme appears complete when he gains her father’s consent to marriage, but Yvonne loves Lord Antony Dewhurst and escapes with him. Martin-Roget answers by abducting her and carrying her into revolutionary France.

Lord Tony appeals to Sir Percy Blakeney, whose pursuit leads into Nantes during Jean-Baptiste Carrier’s campaign of imprisonment and mass killing. Personal vengeance becomes protected by revolutionary office, while forged identities and official violence make Yvonne difficult to recover. The novel uses the prisons, executions and drownings associated with Carrier to show how an old grievance can acquire the authority of the state.
