Europe after World War I. Rosemary Fowkes, a prominent British journalist, accepts an invitation to report on Romanian administration in Transylvania, a region she knew before the war through her Hungarian friends. She travels with her new husband, Jasper, while Peter Blakeney—the man she once loved and a descendant of the Scarlet Pimpernel—appears to have chosen the Romanian side in the conflict over land, identity and political loyalty.

The arrest of young Hungarian aristocrats places Rosemary under pressure to publish a favourable account in exchange for their safety. Peter’s conduct becomes part of a larger strategy of disguise and counter-intrigue, forcing Rosemary to decide whom she can trust. The novel transfers the Pimpernel pattern from revolutionary France to the territorial settlement after 1918, presenting the transfer of Transylvania to Romania through the fears and resentments of dispossessed Hungarian landowners.
