Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, arrives at Elizabeth I’s court with youth, lineage and a hunger for distinction. He becomes one of the ageing queen’s most visible favourites, yet the intimacy that gives him influence also feeds impatience: Essex wants commands, wealth and political authority on terms Elizabeth will not always grant. His military ambitions draw him toward expeditions abroad and finally to Ireland, while his family circle—among them his sister Penelope Rich and his wife Frances Walsingham—becomes entangled in the consequences of his choices.

The historical arc leads through the Nine Years’ War in Ireland to the Essex Rebellion of 1601. Devereux returned from Ireland against orders, lost the queen’s confidence and eventually tried to force control of government through an armed rising in London. Riches uses that collapse to examine the dangerous mechanics of favour at the Elizabethan court: proximity to the monarch could create extraordinary opportunity, but a favourite who mistook affection for independent power could find the same court suddenly closed against him.
