The novel treats the Wars of the Roses as a long contest of endurance rather than a succession of isolated battles. Jasper Tudor’s loyalty to Henry survives Yorkist victories, shifting diplomacy and the accession of Richard III until exile can finally be turned into invasion. His role in bringing Henry to Bosworth makes him one of the practical architects of the Tudor victory, though he never becomes king himself. Riches centres the uncle whose military experience and persistence helped convert a precarious dynastic claim into a viable challenge for the English crown.
