William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet and actor whose career with the Lord Chamberlain’s Men and King’s Men transformed the commercial theatre of late Tudor and early Stuart London.

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare worked in London as an actor, shareholder and dramatist. His company performed at the Theatre, the Globe, court and private venues, and his plays addressed monarchy, succession, family conflict and political violence while remaining dependent on patronage and official permission.

In Philip Gooden’s Nick Revill mysteries, Shakespeare is Nick’s playwright, colleague and uncertain patron. Each case is structured around a play including Hamlet, Richard II, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Troilus and Cressida, Romeo and Juliet, or a court masque, allowing theatrical plots to influence how Nick interprets real crimes.
