Mary, Queen of Scots fled to England in 1568 after defeat and forced abdication in Scotland. Elizabeth I refused either to restore her or allow her freedom, and Mary was kept under guard in a succession of English houses and castles.
As a Catholic queen with a claim to the English throne, Mary became a focus for rebellion, foreign intervention and conspiracy. Her custodians included George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, and Bess of Hardwick. Evidence from the Babington Plot led to Mary’s trial and execution in 1587.
