The King’s Witch Trilogy

The King’s Witch Trilogy follows the fictional healer and secret Catholic Frances Gorges from the final days of Elizabeth I into the unstable first two decades of James VI and I’s reign. Drawn from rural Hampshire into royal service, Frances survives accusations of witchcraft, religious persecution and a court in which private belief and public allegiance can become matters of life and death.

The sequence moves through the succession of 1603 and the Gunpowder Plot, its aftermath, and the rise of George Villiers. Real figures including Robert Cecil, Thomas Wintour, Walter Raleigh and James I intersect with Frances’s family story, allowing the novels to combine court intrigue, romance and conspiracy with the political and confessional pressures of early Stuart England.
