March 1603. Frances Gorges is summoned from her Hampshire home to nurse the dying Elizabeth I, although she would rather remain among the herbs and remedies that have made her a skilled healer. The queen’s death brings James VI of Scotland to the English throne, and Frances is compelled to join the new royal household. At a court fearful of poison, sorcery and Catholic conspiracy, her medical knowledge can be used against her as readily as it can save a life.
Frances becomes close to the young Princess Elizabeth and to Thomas Wintour, whose Catholic loyalties draw him towards a desperate plot against king and Parliament. Watched by the king’s minister Robert Cecil, she must choose between affection, faith and survival as the Gunpowder Plot approaches. The novel combines a fictional woman’s court experience with the religious persecution and security politics of early Jacobean England.
