Marbeck Mysteries

The Marbeck Mysteries follow Martin Marbeck, an English intelligencer working through the last years of Elizabeth I and the first years of James I. His assignments move from the unresolved war with Spain to the succession crisis of 1603, the peace negotiations of 1604 and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.

Marbeck serves powerful ministers but is never a simple instrument of state. Each case turns on incomplete intelligence, doubtful loyalties and the difference between official policy and the private interests of courtiers, merchants and agents. The series therefore traces not only a spy's career but the changing security problems of England as a long war ends and a new Stuart monarchy tries to establish itself.
