Glorious Revolution

The Glorious Revolution occurred when William of Orange landed in England in 1688 and James II lost effective support. William and Mary were offered the throne under conditions that strengthened Parliament’s role. The revolution was relatively bloodless in England, but connected conflicts in Scotland and Ireland were far more violent.

It mattered because it established a new political and religious settlement. Protestant succession, parliamentary authority and limits on royal power became central to the post-1688 order. The revolution also tied Britain more closely to European war against Louis XIV.

The Glorious Revolution appears in late Stuart and early modern fiction about succession, exile and Protestant fear, and it forms part of the background for Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle. It suits novels about courtiers, soldiers, pamphleteers, Jacobites, Dutch allies and families deciding whether to abandon a king.
