Mary II of England
1662–1694
Mary II was the Protestant elder daughter of James II and became joint monarch with her husband William III after the Revolution of 1688. Her acceptance of the crown displaced her father and established a new political settlement between monarchy and Parliament.
Mary governed in England during William’s military absences and proved more politically capable than her early reluctance suggested. Her death from smallpox in 1694 ended the joint reign and left William to rule alone.
