William III of England
1650–1702
William III was Prince of Orange and, after the Revolution of 1688, King of England, Scotland and Ireland. He ruled jointly with his wife Mary II until her death and devoted much of his career to organising European resistance to Louis XIV of France.
His reign helped secure a Protestant succession and strengthened parliamentary control over taxation and government finance. William also fought the Williamite War in Ireland and oversaw the development of institutions that supported Britain’s emergence as a major military and financial power.
