John Miller examines Britain and Ireland across the three centuries in which medieval political structures gave way to a more closely connected but repeatedly contested group of kingdoms. Beginning with the Wars of the Roses, the book follows the Tudor monarchies, the Reformation, the union of the English and Scottish crowns, the Civil Wars, republic and Restoration, and the political settlements that culminated in the creation of Great Britain in 1707.

Political and religious conflict is set beside long-term social and economic change, including population growth, commerce, state formation and shifting relations among England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Miller presents the emergence of Britain not as a simple process of English expansion, but as the result of dynastic union, war, religious division, negotiation and the changing balance of power among the four nations.
