Britannia, late third century. Valdor, a young Batavian soldier, flees Roman justice after a centurion’s death and is drawn into the service of Carausius, the naval commander who declares himself emperor in Britain and northern Gaul. Valdor’s loyalty and practical ability earn him command along the exposed coastal frontier.
As Count of the Saxon Shore, he must strengthen forts and assemble troops against Saxon and Frankish raiders while Carausius struggles to preserve his breakaway regime. Debased currency, divided armies and Diocletian’s religious policies reveal an empire under strain, forcing Valdor to decide whether he serves Rome, Britannia or the man who gave him power.
