The Great Conspiracy

by John Broughton Book 2 in the The Saxon Shore Trilogy series.

3.2(12)

Roman Britain, fourth century. Leo and Valdor, descendants of the first trilogy hero, survive the coordinated invasions and mutinies remembered as the Great Conspiracy. Their victories against Picts, Scots and other raiders bring military advancement, but family rivalry blocks Valdor from the command of the Saxon Shore he believes he has earned.

Valdor joins Magnus Maximus, first in campaigns within Britain and then in the usurper’s war against Emperor Gratian. His eventual promotion comes as troops are drained from the province and Roman government loses the capacity to defend it. The novel follows a commander trying to preserve order while imperial ambition turns Britain’s defenders into local warlords.
