Avenging Rhodri
Wales, late ninth century. Rhodri Mawr has been killed in battle, leaving his sons to defend a divided inheritance against Mercia, Wessex and renewed Viking attack. Anarawd of Gwynedd must establish his authority while preserving the wider sense of common purpose that his father created among the Welsh kingdoms.
The struggle culminates in Anarawd’s victory over the Mercians at the Battle of the Conwy, remembered as divine vengeance for Rhodri. The novel follows the dynasty beyond that battle, tracing the rival claims, marriages and alliances through which Rhodri’s descendants compete to extend their power and move Wales towards political unity.
