Jarl Dragonheart climbs into the high country above his lands and finds a wolf cub close to death. He carries the animal home and nurses it back to health, convinced that an encounter so unlikely may carry a message from the spirits or gods even though he cannot yet understand what that message means.
The wolf becomes part of Dragonheart’s household as wider threats continue to gather around the Norse communities of Britain and the North Atlantic. Its presence gives the warrior a new sign to interpret in a world where Christianisation, older beliefs and political conflict increasingly overlap, and where instinct may warn of danger before any messenger arrives.
