The Last Viking
Erik the Navigator has spent a lifetime crossing oceans, building a family and helping a Norse clan survive in the New World. Age has slowed him but has not freed him from responsibility, and new dangers threaten the community just as leadership is beginning to pass toward children and grandchildren who have grown up far from Scandinavia.
Erik must decide when experience should guide the clan and when the next generation must act for itself. The story closes his long journey by concentrating on inheritance rather than simple conquest: the settlement can survive only if the people shaped by Erik are capable of protecting it after he is gone, while still adapting to neighbours and conditions he could never have known when he first sailed west.
