The Bear and the Wolf
The Norse attempt to establish a settlement in the New World has ended in disaster after a costly clash with the Penobscot. With many of their strongest warriors dead, the survivors decide to abandon the settlement and attempt the dangerous Atlantic crossing back toward Scandinavia, knowing that hostile rulers may await them there as well.
Their retreat creates another crisis: Erik the Navigator has been left behind and is isolated among peoples who have every reason to distrust the newcomers. The story divides between those fighting the sea on their way east and the man struggling to survive in the west, turning a failed colony into a test of loyalty, navigation and whether the clan can recover from losses that have changed its balance forever.
