The Duke and the King
Rollo has transformed a Viking base on the Seine into a recognised lordship centred on Rouen, but neighbouring rulers still expect the old raider to behave like an unstable barbarian rather than the founder of a new political order. Age has not removed his willingness to fight, and every sign of weakness invites Franks and rival lords to test the settlement.
The struggle now concerns inheritance and legitimacy as much as conquest. Rollo must secure lands, family alliances and a succession capable of surviving him. The novel follows the final stage in the creation of Normandy, when Norse military power begins to harden into a duchy whose rulers will eventually become central players in the politics of France and England.
