Hrolf leaves the service of Jarl Dragonheart and sails with Jarl Gunnar Thorfinnson to the Frankish coast, where the Norsemen establish a new base and begin accumulating wealth. Success attracts rivals, however, and the richer their settlement becomes, the more other Viking leaders see it as something worth taking.

The resulting struggle pits Norse war bands against one another while Hrolf develops from follower into leader. His emerging identity as Hrolf the Horseman connects the story with the longer transformation of Scandinavian settlements in northern Francia, where raiders gradually become landholders and the foundations of Normandy begin to take shape.
