Conquest
William has won the English crown but not the unquestioned obedience of the country. When Richard fitz Malet is granted a manor north of York, the reward places him in one of the most unstable regions of the new kingdom, where resentment of Norman rule is strong and royal authority depends on isolated garrisons and uncertain local support.
Northern rebellion leaves Richard cut off from easy assistance and forces him to turn the people of his estate into a force capable of defending itself. His mixed English and Norman background makes every decision politically charged. The novel follows conquest after the famous battle, showing how William’s victory had to be imposed district by district and how local survival could demand cooperation across the very divide the invasion had created.
