Forest of Foes (the Bernicia Chronicles)
In 652, Beobrand escorts pilgrims through Frankia on their way to Rome. The route brings him into the factional politics of the Merovingian court, where a plot against the royal house surrounds the young churchman Wilfrid. Unable to distinguish ally from conspirator, Beobrand must protect his companions and survive a foreign struggle in which political and ecclesiastical ambition are inseparable.
Frankia forces Beobrand to operate without the authority his reputation gives him in Bernicia. Merovingian faction, clerical ambition and unfamiliar customs make violence harder to read because threats can be disguised as hospitality or religious duty. Protecting Wilfrid therefore becomes a test of judgement as much as swordsmanship, widening the series beyond the politics of northern Britain.
