In 652, Beobrand continues his mission to escort pilgrims from Frankia to Rome. The party includes ambitious churchmen, a mysterious envoy and travellers who repeatedly draw them into danger. Reaching a city of ruins, relics and competing authorities does not end the threat; Rome brings new intrigue and forces Beobrand to defend people whose purposes he does not fully trust.

The pilgrimage forces Beobrand to protect people whose ecclesiastical ambitions are unfamiliar to him while operating outside the political world he knows best. Rome is not simply a sacred destination but a contested city of clerics, envoys and rival interests. The further Beobrand travels from Bernicia, the more heavily he must rely on judgement rather than reputation.
