In 647, Penda of Mercia invades Bernicia and catches the northern kingdom unprepared. Beobrand is tasked with defending the fortress of Bebbanburg while enemies inside and outside the walls pursue their own vengeance. Conflicting oaths and a dangerous attachment divide his loyalties as the siege places Northumbria's survival and his household at risk.
The siege turns Bebbanburg into a confined test of Beobrand’s authority. Defence of the walls is inseparable from protecting his household and judging men whose personal grudges may be as dangerous as Penda’s army. The novel uses the fortress setting to show how Northumbrian politics, oath-taking and family loyalty can fracture under military pressure.
