In 651, rivalry between Oswiu of Bernicia and Oswine of Deira threatens to divide Northumbria. Beobrand's mission to rescue a friend in East Anglia alters the political balance, while Cynan rides into Rheged on a separate quest connected to his past. Both men face betrayal and competing obligations as the conflict moves towards a confrontation over who will rule a united northern kingdom.
The division between Bernicia and Deira makes every private mission politically significant. Beobrand and Cynan move through different parts of the north, but both encounter people whose loyalty depends on which ruler appears likely to prevail. Their separate journeys reveal a kingdom not yet fully united, where friendship and oath-taking can be overturned by a change in royal fortune.
