Wolf of Wessex
In 838, the ageing warrior Dunston discovers a mutilated corpse in the forests of Wessex and is accused of the murder. To clear his name, he must protect the dead man's daughter and uncover the secret pursued by armed enemies. The chase leads through rural communities, old loyalties and the political tensions of ninth-century Wessex, forcing a man seeking solitude to return to violence.
Dunston’s age gives the investigation a different character from a conventional warrior adventure. He knows the habits of the countryside and the violence of earlier campaigns, but he would rather be left alone. Protecting the dead man’s daughter forces him to use those skills again while uncovering a crime rooted in local loyalties and the unstable politics of early ninth-century Wessex.
