After the death of King Edwin, Cadwallon of Gwynedd and his Mercian allies briefly dominate northern Britain, but victory does not produce unity. Cadwallon and the Warlord of Rheged fall out, rival rulers pursue their own claims and the political order fragments again into competing kingdoms.

Gawan and the Warlord must defend Rheged while old prophecies and the return of Myrddyn add an Arthurian dimension to the struggle. The novel presents the seventh-century north as a world in which British, Welsh, Mercian and Northumbrian ambitions overlap, and where one alliance can collapse quickly enough to expose an entire kingdom to invasion or internal betrayal.
