Britain, late sixth century. The age associated with Arthur is passing, but resistance to Anglo-Saxon expansion continues in the northern British kingdoms. After Saxon attackers destroy their village, three orphans are drawn into the war led by King Urien of Rheged.

Their survival brings them into a warrior society where loyalty must be earned and defeat can erase an entire community. As Urien campaigns against neighbouring Saxon powers, the young survivors learn to fight and discover how personal revenge differs from the larger struggle to preserve territory and political independence. The novel places its fictional warriors within the fragmented world of post-Roman Britain, where British and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms competed for control long before England existed as a single state.
