Post-Roman Britain begins after the withdrawal or collapse of Roman imperial authority in the early fifth century. Local rulers, Romano-British communities, incoming Anglo-Saxon groups, Irish raiders, Picts, and later Welsh traditions all belong to this unstable landscape. It is the world behind many later stories of Arthur, Ambrosius, and the defence of Britain.

The period matters because it is a hinge between Roman Britain and the early medieval kingdoms. Archaeology, fragmentary chronicles, and legend leave many gaps, allowing historians and novelists to debate migration, conquest, continuity, and resistance. The loss of Roman structures created space for new war leaders, saints, dynasties, and borderlands.

Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, Rosemary Sutcliff’s Sword at Sunset, and Mary Stewart’s Arthurian novels all draw on this shadowy post-Roman setting.
