Early Medieval

c. 476–1000 CE

The Early Medieval period followed the weakening of Roman power in western Europe and the transformation of older imperial provinces into new kingdoms. It includes Anglo-Saxon England, Merovingian and Carolingian Francia, Lombard Italy, the Byzantine Empire, early Islamic expansion, and the Viking Age. The period is often defined by migration, conversion, regional kingship, and fragile political authority.

This era matters because it created many of the political and cultural foundations of medieval Europe. Christianity spread through rulers, missionaries, monasteries, and royal patronage, while war bands, local elites, and dynasties competed for land and legitimacy. Written evidence is uneven, which gives the period a strong atmosphere of uncertainty and reconstruction.

Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, Rosemary Sutcliff’s post-Roman and early medieval novels, Nicola Griffith’s Hild, and Giles Kristian’s Viking books all use the instability of this period. These books suit stories about frontier kingdoms, pagan and Christian belief, loyalty to a lord, broken Roman memory, and the creation of new identities.
