The Hild Sequence

The Hild Sequence reconstructs the early life of Hilda of Whitby from the few details preserved by Bede and places her within the unstable politics of seventh-century northern Britain. Nicola Griffith imagines Hild first as a perceptive child and royal kinswoman at the court of Edwin of Northumbria, then as a young leader learning to protect land and people during war. The sequence treats observation, memory, kinship and practical knowledge as sources of power in a society where kingship is made through alliance, tribute, marriage and violence.

Hild follows its protagonist from childhood into Edwin’s ascendancy and conversion, presenting Northumbria as a meeting place of Brittonic, Anglian, Irish and Roman Christian traditions. Menewood begins only months later and moves into the destruction of Edwin’s regime, the campaigns of Penda and Cadwallon, and Hild’s effort to build a defensible community from the wreckage. The novels combine biographical imagination with close attention to landscape, agriculture, craft, belief and the material obligations that hold an early medieval household together.
