Autumn, AD 672. A woman dressed entirely in grey tells Abbot Brocc that he will soon die. He dismisses the warning but asks Fidelma for advice; by the time she reaches the remote abbey of Dair Inis, Brocc has been found dead in the sweat house exactly as foretold.

The supposed prophecy intensifies hostility between followers of Christian teaching and defenders of older beliefs.
