In the winter of AD 666, Fidelma and Eadulf answer a secret summons from Eadulf's childhood friend Brother Botulf at Aldred's Abbey in the Saxon kingdoms. They arrive during the old feast of Yule to discover that Botulf has been murdered before he could explain why he needed them.
The abbey is also troubled by reports of a woman resembling the abbot's dead wife, whose appearances are treated as supernatural warnings. Fidelma must investigate Botulf's death within a community shaped by family grudges, religious fear and Saxon law, deciding whether the supposed haunting is a symptom of guilt or a deliberate instrument of deception.
