Northumbria, AD 664. King Oswiu has summoned church leaders to Whitby to decide whether his kingdom will follow Roman or Celtic Christian practice. When Abbess Étain, one of the Celtic delegation's leading speakers, is murdered, the killing threatens to turn a religious dispute into political violence. Fidelma of Cashel is asked to investigate alongside Brother Eadulf, a Saxon attached to the Roman faction.
The inquiry forces the two advocates to work across hostile camps while further deaths deepen suspicion and a plot against the king begins to emerge. Fidelma must distinguish doctrinal rivalry from personal motive and expose a conspiracy before the synod's decision becomes the pretext for civil conflict.
