In 635, King Oswald prepares an alliance through marriage, but news of unrest among the Picts disrupts his plans. Beobrand is charged with escorting the new queen north through dangerous country while enemies pursue him and concealed loyalties threaten the royal party. The journey forces him to distinguish truth from manipulation as private revenge intersects with the security of Northumbria.
The escort mission creates danger because royal marriage is also an instrument of alliance. If the queen fails to reach Oswald safely, the political consequences extend beyond Beobrand’s own honour. Pictish unrest and concealed enemies make the road north as dangerous as a battlefield, while Beobrand’s personal grudges threaten to distract him from the responsibility placed in his hands.
