Britain, AD 641. Oswald of Northumbria has extended his authority across much of England, but Penda of Mercia remains a powerful opponent who has resisted both Northumbrian expansion and the spread of Christianity associated with Oswald’s rule.
Penda seeks allies among British and Saxon rulers while Oswald attempts to preserve a network of kingdoms bound by military and religious influence. The conflict moves towards the Battle of Maserfield, where political rivalry, competing loyalties and different religious traditions will reshape the balance of power among the early English kingdoms.
