Cashel, February AD 668. Nobles and church leaders gather for the formal marriage of Fidelma and Eadulf, but the ceremony is interrupted when Abbot Ultán is murdered in his chamber. The King of Connacht is seen leaving the scene and claims Fidelma's right to act as his legal advocate.
Although the evidence points towards the royal guest, Fidelma discovers that the abbot had injured or threatened many of the people assembled for the wedding. Confronted by competing jurisdictions, family obligations and another death, she must conduct a defence that exposes Ultán's past without allowing political rivalry to overwhelm the law.
